Opening Night

Some pictures from the wonderful opening night. Thanks to everyone who came. Having put on an exhibition outside of Falmouth you realise the difficulty of travel for people without their own transport. I could still confidently say at least 40 people turned up and made it a memorable first show. The amount of confidence gained from setting up a successful show in such a short space of time is invaluable. Thanks again to the sponsors, the drinks were enjoyed by everyone.

Bulb Exhibition from Celop Atlass on Vimeo.

A video i have made documenting my work at the bulb exhibition. I have tried to capture how the piece has worked in the space and the details and intricacies of the work.

How they stand

These pictures document how my sculptures finally stood together in the exhibition space. To be quite honest i felt the space was a bit small. However i cant complain too much as i had one of the largest rooms the gallery had to offer. I would have loved it if people could walk around the sculpture and view it from all angles. It worked well without the upright piece but when this was by itself it did not hold itself as a consolidated piece.

Artist Statement

Artist Statement.

My artwork is my view and comment on issues I feel most important.

Life needs to be fed, as fire requires oxygen. We are now at a point where our consciousness allows us to understand through reason and logic such a large amount of information we may be able to change life’s destructiveness. Everyone knows of the many environmental issues facing the planet yet we so easily overlook them, perhaps doing a bit of recycling to ease our conscience.

My work is currently exploring energy usage and how we are partially unconscious to its existence. I would like to use this as a gateway into broader investigations into the effect energy has on our consciousness.

I would say our consciousness allows us to know these issues however I believe we actually know very little. I can rationally believe that lions and tigers exist yet I have never experienced one myself. I believe this to be the difference between knowing as we generally accept it and truly knowing something that you have experienced. This opens up a huge area for artists to explore and play with. Digital media is leading this change as it is largely due to the capability to share information so easily through print and now the Internet that has led to the rapid advancements in civilisation and our consciousness.

This is the first time my work has taken the form of 3D sculpture and I have learnt a lot from this new approach to my art. This work started with me trying to find ways to represent data in a new aesthetic format. They took the form of circular patterns I had been working on last year. These evolved into 3D versions. I intended to present the patterns as a way of comparing different sets of data to highlight certain issues but found by presenting them as part of a larger piece I am more able to communicate the message to the viewer. Consideration of positioning has been important to my work.

With our growing understanding of the world around us, science and consciousness are always pushing the boundaries of what we know. For anything to change there must be energy to make it happen. In the future I hope to capture energy by looking for materials that will in their use, create physical reactions. By presenting them in a way linked to our perception of them I hope to discover how energy affects us.

Positioning

I spent a lot of time at the Gallery trying to work out the best way to present the work. This was definitely one of the arrangements i liked the most. having the pipe actually in the oil was one of my original ideas. This is a more direct statement suggesting more obviously where the oil and energy comes from. I don't think however it is necessary to be this obvious and prefer the two parts separate aesthetically. The juxtaposition between the intricate details of the energy pattern reflected in oil against its simple solid industrial container are complimented and balanced by the organic curves of the pipe. Two of the most important lessons i have learnt in my art is the value of simplicity and the ability to not be so literal. Allowing the viewer to work some things out for themselves makes the work engaging.

Black Pipes

As you can see i have painted the pipes black. The mushroom paint was very powdery and the finish was not very nice. Although they remind me slightly of drainpipes now i think it was for the best.

I also have moved them about a bit and tried some arrangements recommended by the CMR directors Darren and Liam. They seemed to think that the work was better in the two opposing corners of the room as if they were having an argument. I can understand this aesthetically and it does work but the pieces were made to be together so i think i will return them to the middle of the room where they sit together more comfortably. Here are some pictures anyway...

This is also the first time i have tried standing the pipe up slightly. it does self support in this position and I was considering it because there is not much height to the work when you take the upright valve tap piece out. I don't like it though and doubt I will present the work like this.

Spotlight Test

Light Experiment

As the name of the exhibition was bulb we had an idea to theme the event by linking bulb into each artists work. Wil C, and Anais both used bulbs in their projections and Will S used bulbs to illuminate his models. I experimented with lighting my work with spotlights in my main space and the use of coloured light on the piece downstairs. They made some interesting photos but did nothing for the work itself so I decided against displaying my work like this.
